As you may know from my Instagram stories (or honestly, lack thereof due to my absolute inability to actually use my phone in the 17-degree weather), I am currently in Germany!
I am visiting a friend and while I am in Europe I thought I would do some wedding dress shopping! As you can imagine, while the idea of choosing a wedding dress is of course absolutely dreamy, the actual task can feel quite daunting. It’s only the most important dress you’ll wear in your adult life… and maybe even the most photographed. And not just Instagram photos that everyone you know will stalk, but actual real photos that will be framed in your house for years to come. No pressure. LOL.
Truthfully, I’m not currently planning on buying a dress, however, I want to start thinking about what I want as far as shape and general vibe, as well as get experience in order to prepare for a real appointment. If you are an indecisive type A person like me, you might understand where I’m coming from. Either way, I’m really glad I got to briefly dip my toes into the wedding-dress-shopping water and get some sort of understanding about the process.
My first experience trying on a dress was indeed very emotional and exciting! I honestly teared up as soon as I saw myself in the mirror with an actual wedding dress on! There is nothing quite like seeing yourself in a wedding dress for the first time. The first thing I thought of was, of course, Alex and the second was my mom because I really can’t wait to actually go wedding dress shopping with her! I had to try really hard to not start bawling then and there with all the emotion bubbling up!
I didn’t try on many dresses. I only spent about 30 minutes with 3 different styles in order to get an idea of what different shapes look like on me. Even though I already have a good idea what I want, if endless seasons of Say Yes to The Dress have taught me anything, it’s that you should never rule out a poofy princess dress without at least first trying one on…
Though I left empty-handed, I did leave feeling more secure in what I do and don’t want and got the initial guesswork and uncomfortable ‘I have no idea what I’m doing’ feeling out of the way. Which is nice because I am a very indecisive person and so I already know that even before my first official dress appointment, this preliminary experience was a good jumping off point to ease into the complex world of choosing a wedding dress!
Now, I can’t wait to start looking at what is currently available, booking some serious appointments, and getting started on finding, or maybe creating, my perfect dress! Luckily, I have life saving resources like WeddingWire and their amazing online wedding dress search tool to help me find what I’m looking for.
Whether you’re looking for lace or satin, floor-length or short, off-the-shoulder or strapless, WeddingWire has more than 8,000 wedding dresses to choose from. You can search for styles by silhouette, like mermaid, ball gown, A-line and more. You can even search for phrases like ‘beach’ or ‘vintage-inspired’ to find wedding dresses for a specific venue or location! WeddingWire features wedding dresses from more than 100 designers and wedding dress prices ranging from less than $700 to more than $5,000. It’s honestly the ultimate database and I’m beyond ecstatic that this indecisive Bride to Be has this resource as her guide!
