Welcome to part two of my 2017 favorites series on the blog! In this post I’m going to cover my favorite hair care products that I’ve used this year for both growth and styling. I can’t believe December 22nd is going to be my 3 year natural anniversary… it’s crazy to think how far my hair has come. Not only is it finally at a length I love, but it is also healthier that it has ever been in my entire life! I know for a lot of people hair might just be hair, but for me, wearing my hair curly has been the ultimate form or self acceptance and has given me a new level of confidence in myself that I never could have expected. So whether you are thinking about going natural, newly natural, or don’t even have curly hair but want healthier hair, keep reading for some of my best recommendations!
Below are some of the products that have worked for me, that I use everyday, that I recommend, and that I will continue to use into 2018. All these finding are a result of tons of trail and error and cross comparison, and I have used these products for extended periods of time.
Disclaimer: Though some of these product were sent to me, this is a completely unsponsored post and I have only included items that work for me.
If you’ve been following me for a while, you know what I’m about to say… Sugar Bear Hair Gummies. I know I say this all the time, but these are my favorite hair growth supplement. Here’s why: they don’t break me out, they don’t make me nauseous, they are easy to take, I never forget them because they are delicious, and most importantly: they work to increase the rate of my hair growth. Let me point out as well, that I have tried nearly every hair vitamin on the market. I didn’t just wake up one day and decide these were my favorite, they became my favorite because no other vitamin has all the qualities I listed above. I have also been taking these since September 2016 and I don’t plan on switching anytime soon, which should speak volumes about how much I like these! They are also the one vitamin that when I recommend them, those who take them come back to me months later and tell me how much they love them as well.
The second supplement I love is the Derma Matrix by NeoCell. This is a powdered blend of collagen, hyaluronic acid and vitamin c that you mix with water. I contemplated adding this to my skincare favorites post because all these ingredients are also great for skin, but I decided to keep it in this post because I initially started taking collagen for hair growth. Collagen is a great addition to a complete hair growth routine, but the reason I love this particular collagen is because it has hyaluronic acid and vitamin c as well. Hyaluronic acid has powerful anti-aging properties and is also one of the premier hydrating ingredients for skin. Which may not seem like it has a lot to do with hair, but don’t forget where hair grows out of, the scalp! Hyaluronic acid = healthy skin = healthy scalp = healthy hair. The vitamin c is also great because collagen cannot be converted for the body without it. Over all, this really improved my skin and I’m pretty sure it has helped my hair as well, but I love having a supplement that helps with both.
Last but not least for my favorite ‘supplement’ is green juice. About a month before my trip this year, I started drinking green juice to slim down for Europe. It did help me slip down a bit, but the real difference I saw was my hair. I swear over the last three months my hair has been growing so much! This is a super easy thing to do and great for over all health so I really recommend it. A good diet is key to hair growth and making sure you are getting enough greens is imperative, and this is such an easy way to do that! My personal favorite is this one and I drank about a half a bottle a day (it’s only $9 at Sprouts).
Styling and Products
Earlier this year I had an unfortunate hair coloring disaster. I tried going ombre and came out Chuckie. The result of this traumatic event was a deep conditioning addiction in a frantic effort to breathe life back into my bleached curls. Because desperate times call for desperate measures, Deva Curl sent me the Deep Sea Repair Mask to help out my curls before its release. And I cannot sing enough praise of this mask. Not only was it there for me in my time of need (ok I’ll stop), but it was actually so effective in repairing my hair. I used this mask religiously day and night for about 1.5 months and then every time I showered thereafter. It brought my hair back to life.
Later this year in July, I was invited to the launch of the Deep Sea Repair mask and it’s counter part Melt into Moisture. That trip was my first time trying Melt into Moisture and I fell in love. While the Deep Sea Repair is my favorite for repair and restoring protein, I have to say Melt into Moisture is my favorite mask of all time. It smells so good and melts away my tangles. I use this mask either in the shower for 5 minutes, overnight, or even sometimes leave it in all day in a low bun! I think I honestly use this mask more than any other product. Both of these masks are absolutely amazing, I use the Deep Sea Repair about once a week and then the rest of the time I use Melt into Moisture. I find this balances my hair’s protein and moisture very well.
My favorite conditioner I’ve used this year is Untangled Conditioner by Sienna Naturals. This intensively hydrating, antioxidant-rich conditioner softens hair and adds slip, which simplifies the job of carefully detangling your hair. It smells amazing and has incredible slip, what more could you ask for? For a full tutorial on this line, click here.
Leave in Conditioner, Gels and Gel Creams
Four products have been my styling stand outs this year. I use them each in the same way; I apply root to tip, use a comb and my index finger to define the curls framing my face and then either air dry or diffuse. Pretty simple actually!
First up is Briogeo’s Curl Charisma Control Gel. When I want major volume, this is the product I reach for. I love how it dries on my hair leaving my curls light and fluffy with definition and shine, and it also dries super fast. But the best part it that Briogeo’s products is that they have a 6-free concept with no parades, no silicones, no sulphate, no pthalates, no DEA, and no artificial dyes in any of their products. Which make their products not only good for your hair but also your health.
Second, I love the Lotta Body Shape Me Custard Gelee. I love the way this creates soft hold and lots of body. It’s the perfect mixture of a gel and cream and leaves hair very touchable and soft.
Next, I’ve recently been obsessed with the Curls Blueberry Bliss Reparative Leave In Conditioner. I swear it leaves my hair sooo incredibly soft. Almost too soft! I can never stop touching it. But it dries in a kind of fluffy shiny yet defined way. And I also really love second day hair with this. It just holds ringlets and definition so well without drying out!
Lastly, I love the Hydrating Coconut Oil & Shea Butter Curl Cream by Marc Anthony. It’s actually what I have in my hair as I write this post. I love how soft and defined it leaves my hair with a healthy shine, it’s a really great leave in. Another thing I love particularly about this product is that it seems to work really well on both my dyed blond hair and my roots. I don’t have any immediate plans to dye my hair again so its nice to have something that works on both.
My absolute favorite oil is the Lock and Seal Anti-Breakage Styling Oil by Sienna Naturals. This oil smells sooo divine and is the perfect sealant. This unique liquid Shea Oil blend contains anti-breakage technology specifically engineered to seal down hair cuticles that have been lifted through damaging styling practices such as thermal straightening, bleaching, and brushing. I love pumping some into my palm and running it over my hair after a styling product. I also focus a generous amount on my ends and the curls framing my face. Even though I definitely use way too much, it always seems to dry perfectly. (And leaves my hair so soft!)
I also love the Hydrating Coconut Oil & Shea Butter Dry Styling Oil by Marc Anthony. It’s a really great finishing seal and I love that it comes in a spray bottle for even and easy distribution. I use a lot of this, about 30 sprays all over my hair after cream, and it leaves a gorgeous shine that keeps moisture locked in. It is also a dry oil so it goes on super light and absorbs really fast.
Hair Product Lines
The last thing I want to cover is some of my favorite brands in general. In no particular order, these are the brands whose ingredients and products I trust in general. I know that no matter what I use from them, their products will not damage my hair and will most likely probably be great.
Briogeo – Their 6 free concept (No Sulfates, No Silicones, No Phthalates, No Parabens, No DEA) applies to all of their products so you know that no matter what you use from them, it will be safe on your hair.
Manechoice – Their products are amazing for healthy hair, and I totally trust their ingredients. I love the Green Tea and Carrot Mask.
Sienna Naturals – All their products are vegan, sulfate and silicone free. Nothing in their line will ever compromise the integrity of your hair.
Shea Moisture – You can never go wrong with Shea Moisture. They have sooo many options and were my go-to during my first year natural. (Jamaican Black Castor Oil Leave in anyone?) Their products are inexpensive, accessible and always have a great blend with no bad ingredients (not even gluten!).
Deva Curl – I love what Deva Curl has done in the curly hair industry and really appreciate their all inclusive platform for curly girls. All their products work amazingly for volume and style and you can find just about anything for each curl type.
Thanks for stopping by and reading my favorite hair care of 2017 post! I hope you found the article helpful and if you have any questions don’t hesitate to ask! All these product have really impressed me this year and I’m excited to continue to use them into the new year. I have used each product mentioned for a significant time frame, so I’m confident they are great products. And while I have fine curly hair, most of these can be used on any hair type. Ultimately, my best advice for finding products that work for you is try it for yourself and try different methods of application/use. After three years natural, I can tell immediately if a product will or won’t work for my hair and styling technique, because I know what my hair needs and how it is styled best. And what works best for me is keeping it simple. I like using products that maintain the moisture and health of my hair and that air dry well. I never use more than two products to style (usually a leave in + oil or just a gel for volume) and so the product has to work well on its own too.
Stay tuned for the last post in this series about my favorite purchases of the year!
