2017 is wrapping up and I thought I would do a little mini-series on the blog highlighting some of my favorite things of the year. The first ‘favorites’ post I want to do is on skincare and makeup. If there is one thing I have gotten into more this year than ever before, it’s skincare. Once I turned 25, it was like a switch flipped and taking care of my skin became more than a passive activity in my day to day. I now actively research ingredients, test products, and monitor my skin’s appearance in what can only be attributed to a mini quarter life crisis….kidding…ish… wait is that a wrinkle!?… I digress.
Below are some of the products that have worked for me, that I use everyday, that I recommend, and that I will continue to use into 2018. All these finding are a result of tons of trail and error and cross comparison, and I have used these products for extended periods of time.
Disclaimer: Though some of these product were sent to me, this is a completely unsponsored post and I have only included items that work for me.
This item is a long time favorite of mine and I will probably never stop using it to correct my post inflammation hyper-pigmentation (aka PIH, or dark spots left after a breakout). I started using the Caudalie Vino Perfect Serum in 2012 and no matter how many other product I try, including all the products I tried this year, nothing has ever worked better than this to remove my PIH. Though it’s probably the most expensive item in my skincare routine, it is also the one thing I would never be without. (Also, I recently discovered all Caudalie is half, HALF, the price in Europe, so make sure you stock up on your next trip.)
I have never really struggled with major acne, but out of nowhere I’ve had increased problems this year. It’s not so much the acne that is bad, but the dark spots it leaves after, so I really try to eliminate blemishes as quickly as possible so there aren’t dark spots for months. These are a couple things that have helped a lot. I’m not sure if it’s all four products together, or just one, but the combination of the four has worked quite well to keep my skin clear.
The first isn’t a product, but a treatment. I’m currently a member at Burke Williams Spa and get the 4 Layer Resurfacing Facial about every other month. Recently I’ve been adding on their blue and red light acne treatment, and I think that has really been working to keep acne from surfacing. As much as I love the facial, I think it’s really the light therapy that makes the difference. I would also like to find an effective at home device for this, so if you have recommendations you have tried, please leave a comment.
The second thing I started doing was using these masks. Every. Single. Night. That may sound excessive, but I was really nervous for my skin while traveling for 3 weeks, so I took extremely good care of it the month leading up to and during. And honestly, with using these masks once a night for a month, I saw the most dramatic difference in my skin, it was so glowy! As I’m writing this I’m thinking about how badly I need to do that again. And it’s great because these are so inexpensive! ($10 for 16!)
I also started using the Amala Purity Blemish Treatment. I think this is a really good product for prevention because it contains natural ingredients and is gentle on skin. This gel like serum and has never dried out my skin, which a lot of acne products can do, so it’s great for everyday use over the whole face for general prevention.
Another acne treatment I’ve been using is the Acne Healing Dots from Sephora. When I first tried these I was really skeptical. Truthfully, I did not think they were going to work. But when I used one for the first time over night, I woke up the next morning and my blemish was completely gone. I was shocked. However, I will say it’s about a 50-50 shot that it will get rid of a blemish completely. But even if it doesn’t get rid of it, it will reduce it sigificantly and minimize recovery time. I think these are really amazing and I’m so glad I tried them. When the dots don’t make a blemish disappear immediately, I use these alternating daily on a blemish with the Mario Badescue Drying Lotion, and together they work like a charm.
Around my birthday I got a sample of Yu-Be Moisturizing Skin Cream from Nordstroms and have absolutely fallen in love. It’s a vaseline like consistency but insanely moisturizing. I used this as a night cream after doing the masks I mentioned above for a month straight and my face was glowing.
Another moisturizer I really love is the Avocado Honey Rich Water Balm Cream by Botanic Farm. You can use this as a day cream too, but it’s really thick so it’s perfect for overnight use to wake up with seriously moisturized skin. I like layering rose hip seed oil over it as well to really lock in the moisture.
One of the more pricey items on my favorites list this year is the GlamGlow Thirsty Mud Hydrating Treatment. I swear, this stuff is magical. I fell in love with it earlier this year because it leaves my skin sooo plump, but it wasn’t until my trip to Europe that I discovered how useful it actually is. When we were traveling, I got incredibly sick and my nose was red and dry. I tried so many things to soothe my nose, but applying this to the red part was the only thing that actually heeled my skin. I was really impressed, so even though its pricey, it’s worth it.
Highlighter (and Blush)
That’s everything for my skincare and makeup favorites of 2017! I want to mention again that each of these products have been carefully tested and curated. I use them all daily and they all won out over alternatives. (Even just this week I tried a new foundation and easily knew it did not compare to my favorite!) I guess I’m just proud to say, that after much trial and error, I have a whole collection of items that I really love. And I’m really happy I got to share it with you, so thank you for reading this! If you love any of these too, let me know in the comments below!
